A significant new chapter in Australian military aviation is unfolding, with the Royal Australian Air Force’s first MC-55A Peregrine aircraft now en route to South Australia. Carrying a United States civil registration during delivery, the aircraft represents a major capability milestone as it makes its way from the United States to its future home.

The Royal Australian Air Force’s first MC-55A Peregrine has departed the United States and is currently making its way to Australia, marking a key step in the introduction of the RAAF’s next-generation intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability.

The aircraft, which has been operating under the US civil registration N584GA during its delivery flight, is transiting the Pacific via Hawaii and Guam before continuing on to South Australia. Such routing is typical for long-range military aircraft deliveries and allows for crew rest, logistics support and coordination with allied facilities along the way.

Based on the Gulfstream G550 airframe, the MC-55A Peregrine has been heavily modified to perform advanced intelligence collection and electronic surveillance missions. Once operational, it will replace the RAAF’s ageing AP-3C Orion electronic intelligence role, providing greater range, endurance and sensor capability in a far more modern platform.

While outwardly discreet, the Peregrine represents a substantial leap in situational awareness for the Australian Defence Force. Designed to operate across vast distances, the aircraft will play a central role in monitoring regional activity, supporting joint operations and contributing to Australia’s broader intelligence architecture alongside allied partners.

South Australia has been designated as the home for the MC-55A fleet, further reinforcing the state’s growing importance to Australian defence aviation. The arrival of the first aircraft also signals the transition from development and testing into the early stages of operational introduction, with additional aircraft expected to follow.

Although not a warbird in the traditional sense, the MC-55A Peregrine reflects the continuing evolution of military aviation. Today’s intelligence platforms, like yesterday’s reconnaissance aircraft, quietly shape strategic outcomes without the visibility of frontline combat aircraft.

As the Peregrine completes its delivery journey and begins its service life with the RAAF, it joins a long lineage of specialised aircraft that have played critical but often unseen roles in Australia’s air power history.
